1. – 4. The Rocky Series – (1976, 1979, 1982, 1985, Sylvestor Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith) An underdog boxer has a million-to-one shot at the world heavyweight title. Each movie makes you want to stand up and cheer. The original won the Oscar for best picture and best directing (John Avildsen). The original film was loosely based on the story of Chuck Wepner, a journeyman fighter who nearly upset Muhammed Ali.
5. The Natural – (1984, Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Kim Bassinger, Glenn Close) A once-promising baseball player restarts his career 15 years after battling the demons of his past. Thanks to the performance from Redford, it remains one of the best sports movie ever.
6. Raging Bull – (1980, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty) The out-of-control life of former middleweight champion Jake LaMotta. A well-deserved Oscar for Best Actor (De Niro), although Scorsese was criminally overlooked for Best Director. Considered a masterpiece of filmmaking, a wide range of sports movie essays exist on Raging Bull.
7. Hoosiers – (1987, Gene Hackman, Dennis Hopper) A small-town high school boys basketball team attempts to win the Indiana state championship in 1954. Dennis Hopper doesn’t phone it in as the town drunk, and Gene Hackman is his usual brilliant self.
8. Karate Kid – (1984, Ralph Macchio, Elizabeth Shue, Noriyuki Morita) A teen is tormented by bullies until an elderly Japanese karate master teaches him how to defend himself and take on the local bully in a karate tournament. Wax on, wax off.
9. Major League – (1989, Tom Berenger, Renee Russo, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, Wesley Snipes) A baseball team of losers unexpectedly become winners. Great fun with a mixture of veteran actors and young stars.
10. Remember the Titans – (2000, Denzel Washington) A white Southern high school is integrated with black students from a nearby school in 1971. Both schools are recognized for their football programs, which are now unified. The black coach is chosen to be the head coach of the integrated team, leaving the previous white head coach with feelings of animosity. According to sports movie reviews, it’s one of the best sports movies ever made.
