Science Fiction Movies
By Shane Rivers
When it comes to the best science fiction movies, I’ve also included a select few superhero films into the mix. Read this list, and then search the rest of our site for more science fiction movie reviews and science fiction essays.
1. – 6. The Star Wars Series – (1977, 1980, 1983, 1999, 2002, 2006 Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor) All five movies are among the best ever for action, special effects and cinematography. They’ve won Oscars for art direction, costume design, editing, sound and visual effects. They’ve also made George Lucas richer than God and are considered among the best science fiction movies of all time.
7. Superman: The Movie – (1978, Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, Marlon Brando) My all-time favorite superhero movie. The science fiction reviews for this one were through the roof.
8. Superman II – (1980, Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman) Superman battles villains from the planet Krypton who come to Earth. As good as the first. A number of science fiction essays have been penned wondering why later films didn’t feature the action of this entry.
9. Batman – (Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Bassinger) The best superhero movie next to the original Superman. Nicholson is terrific as the Joker. Oscar for best art direction.
10. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982, Drew Barrymore) A young boy finds an alien mistakenly left behind on Earth. Oscar for best sound, visual effects, sound effects and score.
