Sad Movies

By Shane Rivers

The best sad movies will make you cry your eyes out. Here are a few that I strongly recommend. By the way, A1 Movie Reviews features an ever-growing number of sad movie essays and reviews for your enjoyment.

1. Mask – (1985, Cher, Eric Stolz, Sam Elliott, Laura Dern) Despite Rocky Dennis’ disfigured face, his devoted, yet substance-abusing mother and her warm-hearted biker friends will do anything to ensure he lives a normal life. Check out the rest of our site for a number of sad movie reviews.

2. Million Dollar Baby – (2004, Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman) Clint Eastwood is a boxing trainer who teaches a persistent Hilary Swank how to fight. Then tragedy strikes. This film generated a lot of positive (and sad) movie reviews.

3. Boys on the Side – (1995, Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore, Mary-Louise Parker, Matthew McConaughey) Three mismatched women travel across the country and endure love and loss. They make a home in Arizona and realize the strength and power of their friendship. You’ll need plenty of tissue.

4. Steel Magnolias – (1989, Julia Roberts, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah) Revolving around Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in a small parish in Louisiana, the movie is about a close-knit circle of friends whose lives are intertwined through happiness and tragedy. The ending makes it one of the best sad movies of the ’80s.

5. Terms of Endearment – (1983, Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, John Lithgow, Jeff Daniels) An intimate mother-daughter relationship. Oscar for best picture, adapted screenplay and director (James L. Brooks). Check our site frequently for sad movie essays and other works.
