4. Pretty Woman – (Romantic comedy, 1990, Richard Gere, Julia Roberts) A rich businessman falls in love with with a Los Angeles prostitute. If you ask most housewives, they’ll list this as one of the best romance movies ever committed to film.

5. The American President – (Romantic comedy, 1995, Annette Bening, Michael Douglas) The President of the United States is a widower who falls for a lobbyist.

6. Romancing the Stone – (Romantic comedy/adventure, 1984, Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Danny DeVito) Romance novelist Joan Wilder receives a mysterious package that is the ransom she needs to free her abducted sister. Joan flies to South America to hand it over, but gets on the wrong bus and winds up in the jungle until she encounters Jack Colton. They journey out of the jungle, battling mudslides, drug lords, crazed treasure-hunters and each other.

7. Message in a Bottle – (Love story, 1999, Kevin Cosnter, Robin Wright Penn, Paul Newman) A Chicago journalist discovers a love letter that drifted into the ocean. She finds the widower who wrote it and they fall in love. The slow pace may be a turn-off, but makes the romance realistic. The two fall in love gradually rather than instantly, as is all-too-common in modern romance movies.

8. Jerry Maguire – (Romantic comedy, 1996, Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, Cuba Gooding Jr.) After being fired, Jerry Maguire has one ally, one client, and a long road ahead. Along the way he finds love. Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (Gooding).

9. Tin Cup – (Romantic comedy, 1996, Kevin Costner, Renee Russo) A lackadaisical one-time golf pro, now operating a run-down driving range in West Texas, falls for a competitor’s girlfriend and launches a comeback to compete in the U.S. Open. One of Kevin Costner’s best romance movies.

10. Six Days/Seven Nights – (Romantic comedy, 1998, Harrison Ford, Anne Heche) A New York magazine editor and a curmudgeon pilot are stranded on a desert island and threatened by pirates as they fall in love.
