The top current movie reviews include reviews of such films as Avatar, The Book of Eli, Sherlock Holmes, and Daybreakers. Plenty of others are making the rounds, including a number of films that are getting Oscar buzz (Crazy Heart and A Single Man, for example). Here’s a look at some of the top current movie reviews along with some excerpts.
Avatar Movie Reviews – Avatar continues to set box office records, and much of the critical response has been positive. For example, the film currently holds a 82 % freshness rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. Here are what some of the critics are saying:
“I have seen the future of movies, and it is Avatar.” (Tom Long, Detroit News)
“This is the most technically amazing motion picture to have arrived on screens in many years.” (James Berardinelli, ReelViews)
Stephanie Zacharek of Salon.com called it “a high-tech ‘wish you were here’ scribbled on a very expensive postcard.”
Sherlock Holmes Movie Reviews – While the world waits for Iron Man 2, everyone can get their Robert Downey Jr. fix by seeing this film based on the works of Arthur Conan Doyle. The results haven’t been as positive as Avatar, but the majority of critics have still given it the positive reviews.
“The game is not afoot,” says Steven Rea of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
“Downey and Law play Holmes and Watson as Victorian versions of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” (Peter Howell, Toronto Star)
“The less I thought about Sherlock Holmes, the more I liked Sherlock Holmes.” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times)
Daybreakers Movie Reviews – I expect a vampire movie to draw a mass wave of negative movie reviews, but Daybreakers boasts a 65 % freshness rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Here are a few of the responses from the top current movie reviews:
“Daybreakers is more fun than foreboding.” (Rick Groen, Globe and Mail)
“Even though I’m pretty much vampired out these days, I appreciated the grossout thrills and the B-movie dialogue.” (Richard Roeper from Richard Roeper.com)
“Daybreakers isn’t a great film, but it’s a good one, and in a market oddly lousy with vampire tales, it’s an original.” (Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic)
The Blind Side Movie Reviews – This football-related film has taken the country by storm, and it’s made the record books as the first movie without a major male co-star to surpass the $200 million mark. But was it as popular with the critics? Here’s what a few of them had to say:
“The Blind Side is good enough to make me almost forgive Sandra Bullock for All About Steve.” (Eric D. Snider, Film.com)
“It’s a cute, touchy-feely crowd pleaser that wants nothing more than to wrap audiences in a warm holiday embrace.” (Adam Graham, Detroit News)
“Writer-director John Lee Hancock wisely lets the true story of Michael Oher speak for itself.” (Glenn Whipp, Associated Press)
Crazy Heart Movie Reviews – Jeff Bridges is getting Oscar talk for his performance as an aging country musician in Crazy Heart. The movie is drawing rave reviews, with a 100% freshness rating from the Top Critics at Rotten Tomatoes.
“It’s one of the year’s best, most deeply felt films.” (Kyle Smith, New York Post)
Claudia Puig of USA Today calls Bridges’ performance “perhaps the best of his career.”
“Some actors are blessed. Jeff Bridges is one of them.” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times)
A Single Man Movie Reviews – Another film that’s been mentioned during Oscar discussions is A Single Man, a film about a grieving professor who’s intent on committing suicide. Colin Firth’s performance has been singled out as especially powerful.
“Firth plays a drowning man who can’t yell for help, and it’s an awful thing to see.” (Ty Burr, Boston Globe)
“This is a wonderful movie.” (A.O. Scott, At the Movies)
“Wrenching and ravishing…An exquisite, almost sensual grief suffuses every frame.” (Bob Mondello, NPR)
The Book of Eli Movie Reviews – While it doesn’t hit theaters until Friday, this post-apocalyptic Denzel Washington film is getting raked over the coals by the critics who’ve seen it so far.
“Washington’s Eli is ultimately too confined by the man-of-a-few-words movie norms he’s saddled with.” (Todd McCarthy, Variety)
“In the future, according to The Book of Eli, we’ll all dress like we’re in a Nine Inch Nails music video. It is written.” (Jake Coyle, Associated Press)
“The Book of Eli is a post-apocalyptic western cursed by laborious pacing and a sense of self-importance which its nutty story does not warrant.” (Mike Goodridge, Screen International)
