Movie Reviews for Kids
Lots of movie review are aimed at parents choosing a family-friendly flick. But what about movie reviews for kids themselves? Old folks like us have already weighed in with our list of some good kid movies, as well as some great movies for the whole family on our sister site, Only Good Movies.
But today’s children are sophisticated and capable of telling you just what they do and do not like about everything, including what’s playing at the local cineplex. For example, my little brother (he’s 17) tells me that he thought that, between all the blue people and the distant planet, Avatar looked like a really expensive Pokemon movie. My 12-year-old brother, on the other hand, could not get enough of Ninja Assassin. Meanwhile, you can probably guess what my 15-year old sister thought of Twilight: New Moon.
Unfortunately, there aren’t as many sites dishing out this kind of reel talk from the younger set as one would hope. Here are a few that let you know what the kids are saying:
- Kids Pick Flicks: Billed as the Entertainment Weekly for kids – no 50-year-old guys allowed – Kids Pick Flicks features movie reviews for kids in which the under-18 critics tell it like it is. The good thing about this site is that it doesn’t just focus on the predictable animated kiddie fare. Reviews include PG-13 blockbuster action and romantic comedies that are new to theatres, as well as on DVD. Occasionally, a celeb kid reviewer (like Brothers’ Bailee Madison) contributes.
- KidzWorld: Started in 1999 as a safe place for children to explore the Internet, KidzWorld encompasses more than just movie reviews for kids. It also covers sports and video games, offers advice, and features a social networking feature. The site’s kid-friendly reviews of recent releases and DVDs are short and usually divvied up into sections to make for easy reading.
- Teen Ink: Teen Ink is a national teen magazine for kids ages 13-19. It gives these older children the chance to publish their own creative work and opinions, including movie reviews for kids their age. Because it’s user-generated, you should expect to see multiple reviews of the same movie (especially if that movie involves Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner), but many kids welcome the diversity of opinions.
- BillyBear4Kids – On the other end of the spectrum is BillyBear4Kids, a catch-all site for and by the youngest tots in your home. In the site’s movie review section Popcorn at Home with Zyia, the toddler gives the simplest style movie review of all: a thumbs up or thumbs down. This site features only DVD releases, which are primarily animated.
